150 MW Solar Thermal Power Plant in Port Augusta Announced

On 14 August 2017, South Australian Premier, Jay Weatherill, announced that a solar thermal power plant in Port Augusta, SA has been secured. Construction of the 150 MW Aurora Solar Energy Project will start in 2018 and is planned to be completed by 2020. The power plant will supply dispatchable power to the State Government's needs with 8 to 10 hours of full-load thermal energy storage and will create more than 700 jobs

ARENA to test market for concentrated solar thermal projects: Request for information

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is currently seeking industry information as the first step in exploring how concentrated sunlight could generate reliable, affordable renewable energy with built-in storage for our national grids. 

Interested parties are expected to include (but are not limited to) project proponents, debt and equity investors, original equipment manufacturers, off-takers and government entities.

Responses are due by 5pm 31 July 2017, can cover all types of CST technology and project sizes, and should not exceed a written submission of 20 pages.

Submission on the proposed SA Energy Security Target

The South Australian Government is currently developing the legal framework that establishes the state's Energy Security Target, which is part of a six-point plan to enhance the SA power system (see news article on 3 April below). The government has sought feedback from stakeholders on the draft legal framework.
